MBRU Partners with the American Dental Association Forsyth Institute and Engages Boston’s Leading Dental Schools

Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), which leads the learning and discovery missions of Dubai Health, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the American Dental Association Forsyth Institute (AFI), a top-tier, United States-based research institute focused on exploring the connections between oral health and overall well-being. The strategic partnership aims to advance oral health and related technology development in Dubai by fostering research and learning opportunities for students and faculty at MBRU’s Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine (HBMCDM), aligning with Dubai Health’s evidence-based approach to advancing patient care.  The agreement was part of a broader visit by MBRU’s HBMCDM delegation to the United States, during which they engaged with leading academic institutions and explored avenues for international collaboration.

Through strategic partnership, Dubai Health and AFI will collaborate on joint research projects and student exchange programs to address oral health issues, ultimately improving dental care outcomes. The collaboration will also facilitate the organization of joint symposia, conferences, and workshops to foster knowledge exchange among oral health professionals. This partnership aligns with the mission of Dubai Health’s integrated academic health system, where learning and discovery inform evidence-based solutions that enhance patient outcomes and experiences.

Commenting on the partnership, Professor Manal Al Halabi, Dean of HBMCDM at MBRU, said, “This collaboration with the ADA Forsyth Institute represents a significant step forward in our efforts to elevate oral health research and education at MBRU. The agreement creates valuable opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange, ultimately leading to better oral health care.”

“ADA Forsyth has created an ecosystem for oral health technology development,” said AFI’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Wenyuan Shi, “Through this partnership with MBRU, we can extend access to this ecosystem to Dubai Health and promote oral health innovation and research collaboration globally.”

In line with MBRU’s commitment to global collaboration, a delegation from the Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine (HBMCDM) recently visited leading dental schools in Boston to strengthen international partnerships. Led by Professor Manal Al Halabi, the delegation engaged with renowned institutions, including Tufts University and Boston University’s Henry Goldman School of Dental Medicine. During the visit, they participated in the DENTECH ADA Forsyth meeting, where Professor Al Halabi contributed as a panelist in a discussion on Global Innovation and Investment. The team also attended the Tufts Annual Implantology Symposium, with Professor Al Halabi joining the Dean’s Round Table discussion alongside esteemed leaders from prominent global dental institutions. Additionally, the delegation met with Dubai Health scholars in Boston to support their academic and professional development.

The delegation also included Dr. Eman Alnuaimi, Assistant Dean for Student Happiness and Wellbeing; Professor Momen Atieh, Chair of Oral Diagnostics and Surgical Sciences; Dr. Mohamed Jamal, Program Director for Endodontics; and Dr. Anas AlSalami, Program Director for Pediatric Dentistry.

Dubai Health Announces New Cohort of Emirati Scholars for Residency Training in Canada

Dubai Health has announced that eight Emirati scholars have secured residency training positions in Canada. This achievement was facilitated through Dubai Health’s Academic Mentorship Program at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences’ Deanship of Graduate Medical Education, which aims to cultivate the next generation of highly skilled healthcare professionals equipped to address the evolving demands of patient care.

This latest cohort brings the total number of Emirati scholars pursuing residency programs in North America through Dubai Health’s program to 38. The current group of scholars will specialize in General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, and Diagnostic Radiology. Residency programs will range from three to five years, depending on the chosen speciality.

Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Deputy CEO and Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health, and Provost of MBRU, stated: “This achievement exemplifies the strength of our learning mission, one of the four core missions of Dubai Health. It reflects the high standard of medical education, mentorship, and clinical training that MBRU provides as part of Dubai’s integrated academic health system. The success of these scholars in securing residency positions abroad reinforces our commitment to preparing medical professionals who can thrive in a global healthcare landscape. I am proud of their dedication and equally proud of the graduate medical education team that has guided and supported them.”

Professor Suleiman Al Emran, Dean of Graduate Medical Education at MBRU, confirmed that the doctors will leave for Canada in the second quarter of 2025. He highlighted that these training programs will significantly refine the doctors' skills and capabilities, ultimately enhancing and fulfilling Dubai Health’s ‘Patient First’ promise.

The doctors selected for this opportunity include Dr. Hend Al-Awadhi, Dr. Fatima Abdulaziz Al-Baftah, and Dr. Ahmed Sahib Al-Habshi, specializing in General Surgery; Dr. Mizna Ali Hussein, and Dr. Salma bin Hindi, specializing in Internal Medicine; Dr. Hind Sameh Al-Halyan, specializing in Orthopedic Trauma Surgery; and Dr. Mohammed Al Banna, specializing in Emergency Medicine; and Dr. Ahmed Saleh Al Haj, specializing in Diagnostic Radiology.

Dr. Hend Al-Awadhi, one of the doctors selected for training at McMaster University in General Surgery, said: “I am honored to receive this incredible training opportunity from MBRU and Dubai Health. Dubai Health Celebrates Graduation of First Dental PhD Students from Queen's University Belfast

Dubai Health proudly announces the graduation of Dr. Khawla Humaid Belhoul and Dr. Anas Ali AlSalami, marking a significant milestone as the first dental PhD graduates from its academic partnership with Queen's University Belfast (QUB). This achievement highlights Dubai Health's unwavering commitment to capacity development and elevating healthcare in alignment with the Dubai Social Agenda 33.

The graduation ceremony was held at QUB, in the presence of Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU); Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Deputy CEO and Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of MBRU; and Professor Manal Al-Halabi, Dean of Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine at MBRU.

Her doctoral thesis, titled "Oral Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in the UAE," investigates the prevalence of oral and dental diseases and identifies opportunities for improving oral health in the UAE.

Dr. Anas Ali AlSalami thanked Dubai Health for the invaluable support throughout his PhD journey, which significantly contributed to his personal and professional growth. His thesis, titled "Maternal Diabetes and Children's Use of Dental Services in Northern Ireland," investigates the potential long-term effects of maternal diabetes on the general and oral health of children. It specifically addresses gestational diabetes. Additionally, the research incorporates an analysis of the health economic implications for healthcare systems, suggesting that children born to mothers with diabetes may face increased risk of dental issues, such as tooth decay. Dr. Anas stated, "My research aims to develop preventive strategies, including community awareness programs, school screenings, and health policies tailored to the UAE population, with the goal of reducing the prevalence of dental disease, enhancing oral health awareness, and promoting healthy dental care habits from a young age."

Mediclinic Middle East and Dubai Health Celebrate Outstanding Contributions at Second Annual Excellence Awards

The second annual Mediclinic Middle East and Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) Excellence Awards were held at MBRU. The awards celebrate the dedication and achievements of Mediclinic staff who have contributed to the education and academic training of MBRU’s MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) students, MSc Nursing trainees, and postgraduate medical residents and fellows.

 

Mediclinic Middle East and MBRU work closely together to provide MBRU students and trainees with valuable clinical experience at Mediclinic’s facilities in Dubai. This academic partnership also offers opportunities for the students and trainees to engage in research with Mediclinic’s research-focused physicians, fostering a robust environment for academic and professional growth.

 

The event featured the ‘Educator of the Year’, ‘Star’ and ‘The Outstanding Leadership in Healthcare Education’ awards, recognizing individuals from Mediclinic who have made exceptional contributions to students’ educational journeys. The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Dr. Edwin Hertzog Outstanding Educator of the Year Award 2023-2024. Selected by a panel of judges from Mediclinic and MBRU based on student nominations, this award recognises individuals who possess a unique set of qualities and skills that make them highly effective in teaching and guiding aspiring medical professionals. This year, Dr. Gerasmos Capatos, Consultant Intensivist at Mediclinic Parkview Hospital and Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at MBRU, was recognized with this award. In addition, Dr. Paddy Kilian was awarded The Outstanding Leadership in Healthcare Education award for her pivotal role as an exceptional leader fostering collaboration between MBRU and Mediclinic.

Al Jalila Foundation receives AED11.3 million donation from Khalaf Al Habtoor

Al Jalila Foundation, the giving arm of Dubai Health, announced that it has received a donation of AED11.3 million from renowned businessman and philanthropist His Excellency Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor. The pledge will help cover the annual cost of 4,000 dialysis sessions for needy patients residing in the UAE. Additionally, the donation will fund the renovation of the nephrology unit at Dubai Hospital.

The renovated nephrology unit will be named after the late Mohammed Khalifa Al Suwaidi in honour of his legacy of philanthropy and community service. The contribution for the unit comes from Al Suwaidi’s estate, which is managed by His Excellency Al Habtoor as per Al Suwaidi’s will. The funds are dedicated to support charitable and humanitarian projects and HE Al Habtoor has taken care to ensure that the resources are used to support initiatives that enhance lives, elevate healthcare services, and benefit society at large.

Speaking about the initiative, HE Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, Founder and Chairman of Al Habtoor Group, said: “We are proud to continue the legacy of our founding fathers, who instilled in us the values of solidarity and generosity that define the UAE. Supporting Al Jalila Foundation reflects our steadfast commitment to advancing healthcare and easing the burdens of kidney patients.

Dubai Health signs strategic partnership with Emirates Group

Dubai Health, Dubai’s first integrated academic health system, and Emirates Group signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) underscoring a commitment to enhance the patient experience and embed a culture of compassionate hospitality within healthcare.

In the presence of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Health Board of Directors, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group; and His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Health Board of Directors, the MoU was signed by Adel Al Redha, Chief Operating Officer of Emirates, and Dr Amer Al Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU).

Chaired by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Dubai Health Board of Directors inaugural meeting of the second term approved plans for the new Diabetes Center. Set to open in 2026, the new center will offer services in alignment with the highest global standards. This project underscores Dubai Health's commitment to contributing towards the Dubai Social Agenda 33, which promotes healthy lifestyles and enhances the quality of health and preventive services.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai Health, presided over the first meeting for the second term, held following Decree No. 53 issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. The meeting was held at Dubai Health's headquarters, attended by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai Health, in addition to members of the Board of Directors including Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, His Excellency Abdullah Abdul Rahman Al Shaibani, Professor Sir Ian Andrew Greer, Mohammed Hassan Al-Shehhi, Walid Saeed Al-Awadhi, the CEO of Dubai Health Dr. Amer Sharif, and the representative from Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), Professor Alawi Al-Sheikh Ali.

Creating a Sustainable Healthcare Sector

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum reaffirmed Dubai Health's dedication to positioning Dubai as one of the best cities in the world in healthcare, medical education and scientific research, guided by the Emirate's visionary leadership. A Fundamental Pillar

His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, highlighted that Dubai Health will spare no effort to achieve the vision of the leadership to transform Dubai into a leading global model in advancing health for humanity, and how sustained investments in health and well-being have strengthened the healthcare ecosystem and reinforced public trust.

During its meeting, the Board discussed Dubai Health's key achievements in the first term and examined several upcoming strategic projects and programs aimed at enhancing care. The Board also reviewed progress on the Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Hospital and approved plans for a new Diabetes Center.

The New Diabetes Center

Scheduled to open in 2026, the new center embodies the integrated academic health system’s commitment to deliver care that evolves alongside continuous research and learning, in accordance with the highest international standards. The new center builds on the continuous service provided through the Diabetes Center, which celebrated 15 years of providing healthcare services to patients this year. Dubai Health's Diabetes Center has been a cornerstone of specialized diabetes care, having served over 15,000 patients since its establishment in 2009.

The new center will cover a total area of ​​more than 53,000 square feet, double the size of the current facility, and will enable Dubai Health to treat twice as many patients in the next 10 years. The center will also offer a broad range of services and advanced therapeutic programs, enhancing the comprehensive healthcare experience. The new location is also easily accessible from various areas of the Emirate of Dubai.

 

 

Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, Member of the Dubai Health Board of Directors and Chair of the Steering Committee of the new Diabetes Center, said: "The new facility with its patient centered design will strengthen the integrated healthcare ecosystem in Dubai. Through a sharp focus on medical innovation and the adoption of the latest technologies, we aim to continuously develop services that provide the highest levels of specialized care for diabetes patients.”

Dr. Mohamed Farooqi, Director of the Diabetes Center and Consultant Endocrinologist at Dubai Health, emphasized the importance of the new center and its pivotal role in supporting diabetes patients, stating: "The new center builds on Dubai Health's years of experience and commitment to exceptional care, offering both specialized treatment and prevention service to meet the needs for comprehensive care of patients across Dubai. With the addition of specialties such as cardiology, nephrology, and ophthalmology, we will be able to offer an advanced level of care."

He further commented: "The new center demonstrates our dedication to incorporating the latest technology into our academic health system, with an emphasis on integrating endocrinology specialties within pediatric care. We aim to deliver comprehensive treatment that meets patients' needs and helps to enhance their long-term health outcomes."
